Preceptorships

Preceptorship Program mission:

To build the capacity of clinicians to provide quality, culturally relevant care to communities of color impacted by HIV/AIDS.

What is an NMAETC Preceptorship?

NMAETC preceptorships are a series of structured and integrated didactic presentations, case studies and clinical experiences under the direction of expert faculty and clinicians. The preceptorship program incorporates the Chronic Care Model which identifies the essential elements of a health care system that encourage high-quality chronic disease care. The program also concentrates on the management of an HIV clinical setting, including topics such as:

  • The use of CQI in the clinic
  • The proper use of adherence protocols
  • The implementation and use of nurse – educators
  • The proper implementation and use of peer educators
  • The proper implementation of HIPAA Security in regard in Electronic Health Records*

*HIPAA Security is a component offered in the Infrastructure Management Module

  • Clinical Pharmacists
  • Other Allied Health Professionals

Objectives

At the conclusion of the Preceptorship, participants should be able to:

  • Describe the current state of knowledge of HIV/AIDS infection in adults and children
  • Describe the current clinical management guidelines that are recommended by the Department of Health and Human Services
  • Discuss the pharmacology and therapeutic use of antiretroviral medications
  • Discuss common drug interactions between antiretrovirals and other medications
  • Describe the metabolic complications of antiretrovirals, as it relates to hyperglycemia, lipodystrophy and mitochondrial dysfunction
  • Describe the nutritional support needs of persons with HIV infection
  • Discuss the management of common HIV-related complications and co-morbidities
  • Identify oral manifestations of HIV/AIDS related conditions and their treatment
  • Identify the components of the HIV/AIDS testing and counseling interaction
  • Discuss the BE SAFE Cultural Competency Model and other tools designed to improve patient provider relationships
