Clinical Delivery
The NMAETC Clinical Education & Training Curriculum comprises modules that enhance the HIV/AIDS clinical expertise of providers who already possess a wealth of experience relative to serving minority populations. The Curriculum also has modules that train primary care physicians and other clinicians who are new to HIV/AIDS treatment so that they gain the necessary tools to recognize, treat and refer minority patients to infectious disease specialists.
The NMAETC Clinical Education & Training Curriculum consists of the following modules:
Clinical Decision Making
Clinical Decision Making focuses on the clinician’s use of data to make treatment decisions in HIV management. This training is based on a practical decision-making model and begins with an overview of the most common clinical and ethical dilemmas that are encountered in HIV-related therapy. Some of the topics covered in the training include:
- Regular monitoring of CD4+ cells and viral loads
- Treatment guided by use of resistance testing
- Appropriate treatment and prophylaxis of opportunistic infections
- Screening and vaccination
- Treatment of Psychiatric co-morbidities
Clinical Delivery
Clinical Delivery addresses operational efficiency in the delivery of clinical care. This module also encompasses the various aspects of the clinic visit such as clinic wait time, sensitive professional staff, clinician-patient communication as well as ease in scheduling appointments, wait time for securing appointments, availability of clinicians to consult with patients, prescription refills, and referrals to medical specialists.

With the recent CDC guidelines prompting widespread HIV testing, it is especially important for providers to recognize HIV symptoms and recommend HIV tests to their patients. NMAETC Clinic Delivery training covers the following areas:
- Reduction of HIV related stigma within the healthcare setting
- Basic HIV management and symptom recognition
- Focus on HIV and its relationship with other chronic diseases
- Systematic approaches for the primary care providers to implement HIV testing and referral
Patient Self Management
NMAETC provides training in the area of Patient Self Management according Health Resources Services & Administration (HRSA) guidelines. This training provides health care providers with the decision support and education needed to understand self-management principles and how to apply them in patient encounters.
