Howard University College of Medicine
As one of the nation's areas of highest HIV prevalence and closest linkages with HIV resources, Washington, DC, is an appropriate location for the central office of the project. Furthermore, Howard University is the oldest HBCU (138 years) with its own medical school. Howard University has an enrollment of 11,000 students. Of these students, 81 percent are African American. The College of Medicine has been in continuous operation since 1868. It educates more African American physicians than any of the other 132 medical schools in the country. It is estimated that Howard University has produced slightly less than half of all the African American physicians, dentists, and other healthcare professionals currently practicing in the United States.
The College of Medicine receives the largest portion of research funding throughout the University. The faculty is involved in grant funding amounting to over $32.4 Million and the college administers many other projects, especially focused on diseases that disproportionately affect African-Americans. Included in these are genomics and the relationship to diabetes, AIDS, sickle cell anemia, and projects funded under the Cancer Research Center, and the General Clinical Research Center.
The National Office at Howard University is responsible for the oversight of the project, including stewardship of the funds and oversight of all consortium activities. The Center's leadership is provided by Dr. Goulda Downer, Principal Investigator. Dr. Downer has overall local administrative responsibility for planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of the goals and objectives of NMAETC program. This location also functions as a Regional Performance Site for the Mid Atlantic and Northeast Regions of the United States. NMAETC National Office is housed in the Howard University Research Building (HURB1) on 7th Street, Northwest Washington, D.C.
